Ryanair is voted bottom of budget airlines in customer survey - and BA isn't far behind

Ryanair and Vueling have been grounded at the bottom of customer ratings for airlines.

Passengers scored the budget carriers just 45% each in the Which? annual poll.

The consumer group also found British Airways had nose-dived in popularity, with a customer score of 52%.

In the year it scrapped free catering on most short-haul flights, the national flag carrier – which got 67% last year – trailed third from bottom.

Which? Travel’s Rory Boland said: “Passengers are telling us there are many ways to be a great airline, but providing great service at an acceptable price is a must have.”

The poll of 11,625 members, about airlines that fly from the UK, showed cheap prices did not have to mean poor service. Jet2 and Norwegian both scored 76%, so were joint second.

Channel Islands’ Aurigny Air Services topped the list of 20 airlines, with 80%. Vueling and Ryanair came joint 19th.

Both have faced Civil Aviation Authority enforcement action after failing to properly inform passengers of their rights over travel disruption earlier this year.

In September Ryanair cancelled 20,000 flights due to botched pilot rotas, affecting 400,000 passengers. Large numbers of crew were rumoured to be leaving.

Today the Irish carrier offered to recognise pilot unions for the first time in its 32-year history, to stop them striking for the first time on Wednesday.

Boss Michael O’Leary’s refusal to recognise unions was at the heart of his low-cost model.

He said: “Recognising unions will be a significant change, but we’ve delivered radical change before. Christmas flights are very important to our customers and we wish to remove any worry that they may be disrupted by industrial action next week.”

Ryanair has sent the offer to representative bodies in the UK, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy and Portugal.
